Hey, it’s his money. If he wants new he can get new. Tell him to invest a few hundred bucks in crash bars, he’ll thank you later.

Offer to buy it off of him after he has a slide. And remind him that it loses all its value after even just a  tip over. Meanwhile a ninja with scratched fairings and a bit of tearing on the seat is just like every other ninja.

I think even the little Sportster is too much for an absolute beginner. I tell everyone who asks to just buy a Buell Blast. Ride it for six months and sell it for what you paid. They are somewhat comfortable and are easy to pick up off the road.

I guess I don’t really get the big deal, the new guy with a $18k Harley is probably significantly better off than the guy on a beat to death $5k liter bike or even 600 * whatever your preferred acronym is*. It’s heavy but it also isn’t crazy fast and has a fairly low seating position.

Tell him to look at a new leader bike instead. Modern ones have all the fancy electronic gizmos to keep you safe. ABS, traction control, wheelie control, launch control, etc.

Maybe he'll do great with the bike, care for it very well, ride it responsibly and live a long a happy life anchored by the decision to throw caution to the wind and spend his money on the things he enjoys.

First time riders should spend some quality time on RENTAL bikes, if at all possible, but unfortunately it isn’t in all areas.

Same rationale as buying used first... only even more temporary, and more versatile in being able to rent various different types of bikes.

Liking the stats and the style of a bike is not a guarantee that one will like riding or owning that bike... especially if it doesn’t fit the rider, or the riding style.

I loved my Honda Hawk GT. Absolutely great little bike... eventually, I didn’t ride it as much because it was too small, and the ergos just a bit too tight for me to be comfortable, and not almost banging my elbows on my knees when trying to ride more purposefully.

I’m 6'2", and i t has been another ten years since I frequently rode a bike, and I have been at a desk job since then... so I figure sport bikes are probably outside of the realm for me... and I am not a big fan of big adventure bikes.

Sport touring bikes are all but DEAD and GONE.

Full-dress tourers, traditional feet-forward cruisers, factory-Cafe-wannabe-customs, and retro-naked sport standards are about all that is left.

I don’t plan on riding cross country, so I don’t need built-on luggage, but some soft bags on occaision might be nice.

Most feet-forward cruisers are ancient tech, and all-style, no handling substance. I might as well buy something fun with four wheels.

The factory-cafe stuff, like BMW R-NineT and others are nice, but the ergos aren’t much more forgiving than a faired street-sport bike, and again, usually for someone not as tall or big as I am, just as I was too big for that Hawk GT.

And very little of it, aside from the Yamaha Triples, are nice bikes at 800-900ccs of displacement and moderate power. Enough to be quick and a bit fast, but not trying to kill anyone who dares twist the throttle.

Nice bikes tend to be above 12 grand, and above 1200cc, and above 120 horsepower.... OK, but not great for a beginner, and maybe a bit of a handful for someone getting back on a motorcycle after a few years.

Bikes like Honda VFR1200, BMW K1200R-Sport or R1100S , Moto Guzzi V11 LeMans, and such are discontinued. Ducati XDiavel is interesting, as a cruiser it is new-think and appears to actually be able to handle well, even with feet-forward... but it is very powerful, and very expensive, even though it is very cool.

Most bikes in the 650-999cc range are pared-down budget models of other bikes, and by being budget bikes... components like suspension quality, design, calibration , tire sizes, and build quality are usually the corners that get cut.

Indian Scout and Scout 60 look interesting, with good power, and the traditional looks aren’t bad... but I wonder about braking and handling on 16" balloon tires, thin forks, short shocks, and a single front brake. I would be more interested in 17" moderately wide road tires on modern wheels, substantial USD forks and robust dual front brakes, and rear shocks that wouldn’t be bottomed out with static sag when I sit on the saddle.

And when looking at used... if it isn’t a sport bike, it is H-D or metric-cruiser. VERY little else is commonly found on classified ads, or dealerships... interesting bikes are rare in the first place, and are KEPT by their owners once purchased.

I am not sure what, other than high-riding adventure bikes, or traditional old chrome-monster cruisers  that most 40-60yo guys are riding... and I am not into those.
